No7 Beauty Company: VIPS for Innovation

Verve

No7 Beauty Company wanted to bring consumer thinking into the earliest stages of innovation - exploring tensions, testing concepts, and refining claims, packaging, and naming long before formal research. The challenge was that most AI simulations only offered broad, directional reactions; they could describe a consumer segment but couldn't explain why concepts resonated, which claims built credibility, or what separated strong ideas from weak ones.
In partnership with Verve, No7 turned its segmentation into Verve Intelligent Personas & Simulations (VIPS) - generative interpreters of entire audience segments rather than fixed personas. The methodology combined three layers: behavioural metric learning from 522 historical concept tests to understand which claims and emotional territories drove success; qualitative pattern learning from consumer verbatims to capture genuine friction and contradiction rather than generic positivity; and visual/semiotic learning, using 51 coded thematic dimensions to interpret how imagery shaped perception. Researchers validated outputs continuously against real testing data, achieving 91% correlation and an R² of 0.84, and refined the models to introduce authentic push back rather than excessive agreeableness.
The impact has been significant. Innovation spaces that once took weeks can now be developed and refined in hours, enabling live, iterative collaboration with stakeholders. In one ideation workshop, the team tested over 70 consumer tensions and claims territories in a matter of days, with top performers going on to resonate strongly in real consumer research. Access has since scaled business-wide via SSO, with over 100 users across Insights, Innovation, R&D, and Marketing running more than 250 tests in 12 months - raising the quality of ideas entering formal validation.
